The “Soul”

Blog >> The "Soul"

The soul is the ‘driver’ in the body. It is the roohu or spirit or atma, the presence of which makes the physical body alive. Many religious and philosophical traditions support the view that the soul is the ethereal substance – a spirit; a non-material spark – particular to a unique living being. – per Google Definition.  Pahari is Hindi for the hill. Pahari Soul is a quaint place in the Queen of the Hills, Darjeeling, owned by a respected, wonderful, and helpful person.

I am sitting on my bed now, looking at my window. I can see the whole city and the mighty Kanchenjunga. Generally a traveler has rolling feet, but few windows can stop the movement for sometime, and one of them is my window in this ‘Pahari Soul’ property.

While coming here, we had a conversation with an IIM (Indian Institute of Management, world’s one of the topmost business schools) professor to understand whether we are on the right track, in giving back to the society. I found a profound similarity between the twisted roads and the purpose on which we are working on. Roads and life events are unpredictable, all we need a basic framework to support any changes. I would like to quote one of my favourite recent images from the internet here “Relax, nothing is in control”

COVID-19 changed the world. While walking down the roads, it’s a completely different experience. The roads are clean, very less people, very few shops are open, so less business and less livelihood.

So many people are literally asking for help. I was taking to my driver of a shared cab, and I realized they continue to pay the insurance and taxes for the vehicles they own, without any livelihood and they barely make INR 300 per day (nowadays it’s max one full trip Siliguri-Darjeeling-Siliguri) if they are lucky to have that one extra passenger in the car (remember in this time you got to maintain social distancing, so you can’t put lot of people in the shared cab). Imagine the impact on their family.

So, there is a sudden “gap”, and we must do everything we can to fulfill this. It’s not about money always, it could be as simple as setting up a virtual school to train children on life skills, basic communication, thinking creatively, and most importantly teach them how to build trust and help others. Is it very difficult to do?

Well, walking down these streets invoke happy memories, while creating another bunch of happy ones. Only a happy mind can make others happy , it’s never the other way around. Be happy, stay well.
